Hola, soy Sara Montoya Arango, artista y profesora nacida en Bogotá, Colombia, actualmente radicada en Madrid, España. El arte ha sido una de mis mayores pasiones a lo largo de toda mi vida; desde los 3 años, no salgo de casa sin un lápiz y papel en mano. Un poco sobre mí: Salí de Colombia a una edad muy temprana y, junto a mi familia, viví en diversos países como Puerto Rico, México, Chile y España. A los 18 años, me mudé a Providence, Rhode Island, en Estados Unidos, para realizar mis estudios universitarios en la universidad de Brown. Durante mi carrera, comencé a enseñar con el objetivo de aplicar lo que estaba aprendido en Estudios Étnicos y Estudios de Género y Sexualidad.
A lo largo de mi vida, siempre he tenido un profundo interés por la justicia social, especialmente en temas como la justicia reproductiva, los derechos LGBTQ+, el feminismo interseccional, los derechos de las personas migrantes, la justicia racial y la justicia medioambiental. Este compromiso se refleja tanto en mi trabajo académico como en mis prácticas artísticas. Mis proyectos creativos y pedagógicos siempre están orientados hacia la creación de conciencia y el fomento de conversaciones en torno a estos temas, utilizando el arte como una herramienta de transformación social.
A lo largo de varios años, impartí clases de inglés a inmigrantes hispanohablantes en Rhode Island y ofrecí educación de salud sexual a estudiantes de secundaria a través de organizaciones como Planned Parenthood. A través de estas vivencias, consolidé mi pasión por la enseñanza y comprendí el poder transformador de la educación para crear espacios de esperanza y cambio social.
Posteriormente, completé un máster en Artes de la Enseñanza en la Universidad de Brown, donde me formé como profesora de estudios sociales y étnicos, siempre con la intención de integrar enfoques pedagógicos de feminismo interseccional, utilizar el arte como herramienta de cambio social y crear un espacio de cuidado auténtico para mis estudiantes.
Uno de los aspectos distintivos de mi pedagogía es mi enfoque inclusivo, prestando especial atención a trabajar con estudiantes de diversas capacidades, neurodivergentes, LGBTQ+, inmigrantes y bilingües. Mi labor como educadora refleja mi compromiso con la justicia social en cada aula, centrándome en crear espacios seguros y equitativos para todos mis estudiantes.
Tras finalizar mis estudios, trabajé un año en una clínica sin fines de lucro en Oakland, California, como Educadora de Salud. En este rol, ayudé a estudiantes a acceder a servicios médicos, enseñé sobre temas de salud reproductiva y sexual (incluyendo consentimiento, género y sexualidad), realicé pruebas de ITS, brindé asesoría sobre métodos anticonceptivos y proporcioné cuidados de afirmación de género a pacientes LGBTQIA+.
Ahora que estoy de regreso en España, quiero fusionar mi pasión por la educación en el ámbito de la justicia social con mi trabajo artístico. Mi objetivo es impartir clases de arte, tanto individuales como grupales, especializándome en arteterapia. También deseo seguir colaborando en espacios educativos feministas, para inmigrantes y comunidades LGBTQ+. A little bit about me: I left Colombia at a young age, moving with my family to several countries during my childhood, including Puerto Rico, Mexico, Chile, and Spain. While the Andean mountains where I was born and raised will always hold a special place in my heart, these experiences gave me the privilege of immersing myself in multiple cultures, especially throughout Latin America, and learning to appreciate both the similarities and differences between them. At 18, I moved to Providence, Rhode Island, in the United States, to pursue my undergraduate studies at Brown University. During this time, I began teaching, with the goal of applying what I was learning in Ethnic Studies and Gender and Sexuality Studies.
Throughout my life, I’ve been deeply passionate about social justice, particularly in areas like reproductive justice, LGBTQ+ rights, intersectional feminism, immigration rights, racial justice, and environmental justice. These values are central to both my academic/professional work and my artistic practice. I aim to use art as a medium for raising awareness and sparking conversations around these issues, believing in its power as a tool for social transformation.
For several years, I taught English to Spanish-speaking immigrants in Rhode Island and provided sexual health education to high school students through organizations like Planned Parenthood. Through these roles, I solidified my passion for teaching and came to understand the transformative power of education in creating spaces of hope and driving the social changes that justice demands. I went on to earn a Master of Arts in Teaching from Brown University, where I trained as a social studies/ethnic studies teacher. My approach has always been rooted in incorporating intersectional feminist pedagogy, leveraging the power of art for social change, and creating spaces of authentic care for my students.
A key feature of my teaching philosophy is my dedication to working with students of diverse abilities, including neurodivergent students, LGBTQ+ students, immigrant students, and bilingual students. My teaching approach consistently reflects my commitment to social justice, aiming to create inclusive, equitable learning environments where every student can thrive.
After completing my studies, I spent a year working at a nonprofit clinic in Oakland, California, as a Health Educator. In this role, I helped students access medical services, taught reproductive and sexual health (covering topics like consent, gender, and sexuality, etc), conducted STI testing, provided guidance on contraceptive methods, and offered gender-affirming care to LGBTQ+ patients.
Now that I’ve returned to Spain, I’m eager to merge my passion for education with my artistic practice. I plan to offer individual and group art classes, eventually specializing in art therapy, while continuing to work in feminist, immigrant, and LGBTQ+ educational spaces.
